Unplugging for Health — Getting Back to Nature

The balancing act of nature and technology

Technology has proved beneficial in many ways. Faster online shopping, 0–1 fund transfers, and entertainment anytime and anywhere. However, there is an issue that too much technology is negatively impacting our health and well-being.

Staring at screens for hours increases anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders. The constant ping of notifications can be distracting from being present at the moment.

When was the last time you saw someone who wasn’t staring mindlessly into their phones? If you haven’t noticed, you may be one of them.

When used necessarily, tech is a great thing —but we need balance. We need to touch grass and get outside. Humans evolved over millions of years, aligning themselves with the gifts of nature.

Now many of us spend our days in artificial environments like the metaverse, detached from the rhythms of the natural world. Time outdoors enhances creativity, reduces stress, improves mood and attention, and strengthens the immune system. Unplugging allows us to reconnect with ourselves, the opposite of using technology for escapism.

I always think of life before technology took off. We were a more united society. We were more social and intertwined…
