I remember like it was yesterday. I was working for a company who prided themselves on togetherness. From first steps to onboarding, I was welcomed with open arms, had the rolled carpet rolled out for me and all.

Everything seemed like it was going well, until I returned from PTO.

One week before the end of the contract, I was contacted by HR, who told me I wouldn’t get an extension and thanking me for my time. Obviously reading from a script pretending to be affected by the news, I didn’t blame them. They were just doing what they were told.

30 seconds later, my laptop was locked. No chance to say goodbye to colleagues or process the news. As a freelancer, I’m not new to contracts ending, but what I found interesting was the stark contrast in how this company treats people once they start verses when their time is up. It’s like when kids get a new toy, they spend hours playing with it, but eventually, a new toy comes along and the old toys either get tossed in the toy chest or donated.

I’ll admit, it stung at the moment, but looking back, it was a much-needed wake-up call. I thought I would work until the end of contract before being offboarded — but…
