In My Own Way

A Poem

I should've told you how I felt
I could see it in the way you looked at me
that you wanted me to express it with words

I should’ve been there for you
when the world was closing in on you
out of all of those hands that reached out
you were looking for mine

Caught up in my own life
I should’ve been closer
the affectionate words that left my lips
never touched your ears

Hindsight is 20/20
and for the last 365 days
we’ve exchanged not one word
still, I think of you

I’m not a regretful man
No, I wish you happiness and love with another
let him speak his mind at all times
never shying away from giving you what you need

What did I learn?
Say what you feel
in time, I’ll get another chance
for your sake, I promise not to hold back

We as humans can learn a lot from ants. Don’t be nice, be kind.
